Genre Criticism is identifying and evaluating the textual characteristics that include the rhetorical force of the genre. Which were the possible origins of literary, fictional and gender-satisfied texts for audiences. There are three approaches in genre criticism which are Aesthetic approaches, Ritual approaches, and Ideological approaches.

·         AESTHETIC APPROACHES
Aesthetic approaches frequently focus on the detection of recurring formal and stylistic aspects in genre text innovation. Young Sheldon is a spin-off story from The Big Bang Theory about intelligent kids. While Smart Guy is a connected series to the ‘Sister, Sister’ series about T.J an intelligent elementary boy who been advance to high school. So, both story is basically connected with other series or the continuation from others.Although both series genres were a sitcom and still contain some comedic, they have a different style of a sitcom. Young Sheldon is known as a single- camera sitcom, which is its’ be film more like a movie than a play. While Smart Guy is a multi-camera sitcom that been film in the studio and the staged almost like a live theatre but without a live audience. Other than that, the Smart Guy has a rare instance in which where the series lead which is T.J., was completely absent from an episode while they were still on the show. It is because T.J. played by Tahj Mowry been given absent because he got to go to the geology camp. Different from Young Sheldon where the main character Sheldon can be seen in every episode.

·         RITUAL APPROACHES
Ritual approaches utilized semiotic or structural approaches to define and then analyze the recurrent syntagmatic narrative structures and sets of oppositions, themes, discourses that form the prevailing conventions of the genre. Young Sheldon about a young Sheldon Cooper capable of theoretical mathematics and science as he tries to fit into the world around him. Though his relatives and friends are struggling to cope with his extraordinary intellectual abilities and social challenges. Smart Guy is about the T.J. Henderson, an intelligent kid who has been advanced from the fourth grade to the tenth grade and learning to adapt to high school, blending in with older students at the same time, people his own age. The ritual approaches that be portraying in both series is that how the kids use their intelligent in solving some adult problem. So, there will be more scenes about school and how life in school. Since both of it have a character of prodigy boy, it is also talking about how the family adapts the life with an intelligent kid.

·         IDEOLOGICAL APPROACHES
These approaches see television program genres as instruments of power and control, the texts of which "naturalize" the dominant culture of the capitalist system. In the Young Sheldon, the series takes place during the late ’80s to early 90’s make the style of the series represent during that current time. Which is can being know that the Young Sheldon is a story about Sheldon Cooper a character from The Big Bang Theory. The vibe from those times also can be seen in the character outfit that kind of classics because of the different era with now. While for Smart Guy, it takes place around the same time as the series been release around the late of ’90s. So, the style and the outfit of the character of this series is more stylish than Young Sheldon. Not only that, since both series came from a different races, so it shows a different ideology. In Young Sheldon, Sheldon comes from the ‘white’ family in East Texas so for them, Football always what they like. That is why there is a few episodes of the series talk about football. While for Smart Guy that comes from ‘brown’ family, a lot of the episode show more about Basketball since most of the athlete of basketball come from the ‘brown’ people.
